STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Longtime Arden Heights resident Dr. Norman G. Brown, 82, a loving family man and a retired dentist who loved basketball, died Tuesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born in Manhattan, he grew up in the Bronx. He settled in Arden Heights in 1974.
Dr. Brown earned his bachelor of science degree at City College of New York and received his dental training at Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Tennessee.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and joined the Reserves after his active duty ended.
Dr. Brown maintained a private practice in the Bronx for many years. In 1974, he took a position with the city Department of Correction, looking after inmates at the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility. He retired in 1990.
He enjoyed basketball both as a fan and participant. He also had played softball in the Village Green Softball League and followed the Yankees.
Dr. Brown liked dogs and loved his home, his family said.
Surviving are his sons, Allan and Anthony; his daughters, Allison Lupo and Carol Broome; his brothers, Dr. Howard and Dr. Roy; eight grandchildren, and his former wife, Harriette Brown.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
