Doris Bracco, 93, of Rossville, a devoted mother and grandmother who is remembered as caring and selfless, died Saturday in Golden Gate Rehabilitation and Health Center, Meiers Corners.
Born Doris Martellaro in Auburn, N.Y., she graduated from Auburn High School.
She was working in a shoe factory in Auburn when she met Vincent Bracco at a dance there while he was serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his discharge they married and moved to Borough Park, Brooklyn. They moved to New Dorp in 1989, and settled in Rossville in 1995.
Mrs. Bracco enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, especially for the holidays, and her Italian dishes were family favorites. She loved gardening, dancing, walking and was a Frank Sinatra fan. She enjoyed going to summer family gatherings in Pennsylvania, where she was fond of picking strawberries. And she loved visiting the shrine to Padre Pio in Pennsylvania.
My mother always put the well-being of others before her own. She cherished her family. She was beautiful and genuine and the best wife, mother and grandmother we could have been blessed with, said her daughter, Jeannie Kaminski.
Mrs. Bracco was a devout Catholic and went to mass daily at St. Joseph-St. Thomas R.C. Parish, Pleasant Plains, where she was a parishioner.
Vincent, her husband of 55 years, died in 2000.
Surviving, along with her daughter, Jeannie, are her sons, Vincent and Angelo, and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Rossville. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
