STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Longtime Staten Islander, Donald P. Vroome, 84, of Pleasant Plains, a loving father and grandfather, died yesterday in the New Vanderbilt Rehabilitation and Care Center, Clifton.
Born in Lansdowne, Pa., Mr. Vroome was brought to Pleasant Plains at 10-years-old. He graduated from Tottenville High School and belonged to his class' 50th reunion committee.
Mr. Vroome served in the United States Merchant Marines from 1945 to 1947 and worked for the Ford Motor Company in Edison, N.J. for 37 years, retiring in 1985.
He was Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 46 in Tottenville for a decade. He was also a 60-year member of the Huguenot Masonic Lodge 381 in Tottenville and the Richmond Forest, Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
Mr. Vroome enjoyed spending time at his house in the Catskills with family and friends. A world traveler, he had visited England, Belgium, France, Germany, and Alaska among many other states.
He is survived by, Beverly, his wife of 62 years; two sons, Paul and Brian; his brother, Richard; and four grandchildren.
The service will be on Wednesday at 11 am in the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Burial will follow at Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
