Damian C. Russo, 35, of Pleasant Plains, whose joyful spirit, zest for life and compassion for others were a shining example to all who knew him, died Saturday at home, of complications of cardiopulmonary disease.

The lifelong Staten Islander was born with Down syndrome and cardiac anomalies, and was given up for adoption within hours of his birth. He came home to the family of Teri Russo, where he blossomed, and achieved and experienced more than most people do in much longer lives, despite his physical problems.

Mr. Russo attended the Down Syndrome Foundation Learning Center for 15 years, and graduated from The Hungerford School, Clifton.

While at DSF he became a Boy Scout and earned many badges, including the Arrow of Light. He participated in Special Olympics and won medals in many sports, but his favorite was gymnastics.

When his health curtailed some of his activities, he changed to equestrian events, again winning medals and competing in local contests with Carousel Riding Academy.

Mr. Russo loved the performing arts. He enjoyed studying piano and voice, and played and sang each year at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, West Brighton. He was a member of the choir at his parish, St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church in his home community.

He studied dance as well and was an active member of the Drama Group at On Your Mark, appearing in many productions.

He was a client of Lifestyles for the Disabled, where he made jewelry and did needlepoint and beading. He participated in its Partnership with Wagner College in the journalism and social skills groups. He also was a member of Mentors in Training, putting to good use his compassion, always trying to help his peers and listen with a sympathetic ear.

Mr. Russo was an honorary grand marshal for the LGBT 2012 Staten Island Pride Parade.

He also was an original member of No Limits Toastmasters.

He was close to Stephen and Theresa Mandracchia, whom he considered surrogate parents. They helped care for him and took him on fishing trips, expeditions to historical re-enactments, and other outings.

Surviving, along with his mother, Teri, are his brothers, Ronnie, Kris and Alan; his sister, Kristine Betancourt, and his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Russo.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Entombment will follow in Woodbridge (N.J.) Memorial Gardens.
