Clyde John Mahony, 70, died Thursday December 10th, 2020, at Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital from complications related to leukemia. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan; his three children, Brian, Erin, and Matthew; his son-in-law, Jason; his two grandchildren, Lainey and Jacob; his siblings Kathleen Catenese, Regina Spellman, Edward and James Mahony and spouses; nieces, nephews and a great many other relatives.
A life-long Staten Islander, Clyde grew up in Great Kills and graduated from Monsignor Farrell High School in 1968. Competing in track and field for Farrell ranked among his fondest memories.
He married the love of his life Susan in 1983 and they soon settled down in Rossville to start their family. There he spent many wonderful years gardening, bird-watching, and hosting picnics and Easter egg hunts with Susan. He also greatly enjoyed the many hours he spent chatting with his neighbors.
After serving two years in the Army National Guard, Clyde worked as an EMT for several years before becoming a respiratory therapist. He worked in that field for 34 years, most recently at St. Elizabeth Ann's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, until retiring in 2012.
Over the years, Clyde enjoyed many hobbies, including golfing, camping, hiking, and SCUBA diving. He was especially proud to have taken up SCUBA in his later years after retirement. He also served as Cubmaster of his son's cub scout pack. He loved to travel. He took his family by car every year on weeks-long trips across the country to see America's great cities, parks and battlefields. In later years, he traveled to the Caribbean and Europe many times per year on cruise ships.
Visitation will be on Monday, December 14th, 2-5pm, at Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home in Tottenville. Mass will be held at 10:30am Tuesday, at St. Thomas Church, Staten Island. Cremation will be conducted privately thereafter.
The family asks in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Clyde's memory.
