Charles W. Kohm Jr., 57, of West Brighton, a local business owner who loved to give back to his community, died Friday in Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton.
Mr. Kohm was born in Huguenot, and graduated from Tottenville High School. He settled in West Brighton in 1987.
In 1978, he received a bachelor of science degree in English and Spanish from Brooklyn College.
He worked as a bookkeeper for Structure Tone Inc. for 10 years. He then owned several businesses on the Island, including New Zealand Antiques in West Brighton, and Angelo's Legacy Barber Shop in Rosebank.
Mr. Kohm was very active in his community, and would often offer tutoring service in the local library.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed traveling, reading, and writing short stories and poetry. He was also bi-lingual, and spoke Spanish and German.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Huguenot.
Surviving are his mother, Edris, and brothers, Kevin, Brian, John, Otto, Joseph and Peter.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Arrangements include cremation.
