Robert A. Biller, 81, of Charleston, S.C., a retired career Coast Guard captain, died Feb 4 at home.
Born and raised in Tottenville, he graduated from Tottenville High School in 1951.
He lived in Cape May, N.J. and settled in Charleston in 2010.
He graduated first in his class in 1956 from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn., and earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Connecticut, Mansfield.
Mr. Biller served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 28 years. He was stationed in St. George, Boston and Cape May, N.J., where he served as commanding officer of the Coast Guard electronics Center. In addition, he served as commander of Coast Guard Activities Europe in London, and commander of international affairs in Washington, D.C. He retired with the rank of captain in 1980. He was a member of the Military Officers Association of America.
After leaving the service, he taught physics at Stockton State College in Pomona, N.J. for 20 years.
He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Charleston.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Barbara Dixon; his sons, Eric and Kurt; his brother, Ronald; sisters, Joyce Bishop and Linda Krakower; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for Sunday at 2 p.m. in St Andrews United Methodist Church, Charleston, S.C. Burial was in Cape May (N.J.) County Veteran Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Henry Stuhr Ashey Chapel, also Charleston.
