STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Breda Melendez, 80, a longtime resident of Pleasant Plains who is remembered as a loving mother, died yesterday in the Staten Island University Hospital, in Ocean Breeze.
Born Breda Hennebry in Manhattan, she graduated from All Saints High School there. She lived in various neighborhoods throughout New York City before settling in Pleasant Plains in 1952.
Mrs. Melendez worked for 25 years as a medical records coder at the former Bayley Seton Hospital in Clifton, until retiring in 1998.
A member of the Staten Island Herb Society, she loved gardening and was a master composter. She also was a member of Friends of Blue Heron Park.
Mrs. Melendez was a parishioner of St. Thomas-St. Joseph R.C. Parish, Pleasant Plains.
Her husband, Florencio, died in 1970, and her son, Martin, died in 1989.
Surviving are her sons, Patrick, Frederick, James, Daniel, Michael, Anthony, and Joseph, and her daughters, Maureen Morgan, Kathleen Sicurella, and Roseann Kohm.
The funeral will be tomorrow from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church. Burial will be in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale.
