Bernard Stein, 87, a retired city police detective lieutenant and World War II veteran, died Sunday in his Tottenville home.
Born in Brooklyn, he moved to Staten Island in 1964.
He was a member of the city Police Department for 35 years, attaining the rank of detective lieutenant. He then worked in security for an import firm for 25 years, retiring in 2007.
Mr. Stein was among the honorees when the Council of Jewish Organizations bestowed its Community Leadership Recognition Awards at Young Israel, Willowbrook, in 1994.
He enjoyed playing four-wall handball.
Mr. Stein served in the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II.
He was a congregation leader at Congregation Ahavath Israel, Tottenville.
Surviving are his wife, the former Enid Sandler; his son, Charles; his daughter, Cara Stein, and three grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Burial was in United Hebrew Cemetery, Richmond.
