Bernard Campbell

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Former Staten Island resident Bernard P. Campbell, 77, of Brooklyn, a former elementary school principal, died Monday in New York Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, of pneumonia.

Born in Mariners Harbor, Mr. Campbell moved to Brooklyn with his wife in 1961.

Mr. Campbell graduated from the former Cathedral Prepartory High School, Manhattan, and received a bachelor's degree in English literature from St. John's University, Queens. Mr. Campbell received a master's degree in high school education from St. John's University and a master's degree in educational administration and supervision from the former Richmond College, St. George.

Mr. Campbell worked as a teacher in various locations throughout the Island beginning in 1959. He worked as an assistant principal for Markham Intermediate School, Graniteville, from 1974 until 1992. Beginning in 1992, he worked as a principal for PS 1, Tottenville. He retired in 1999.

During the mid-1970s, Mr. Campbell also was a social worker for the former Mission of the Immaculate Virgin at Mount Loretto in Pleasant Plains. While there, he coached baseball and football and was in charge of the cadet corps.

Mr. Campbell served in the U.S. Army from 1953 until 1956, rising to the rank first lieutenant. He was stationed in Louisiana and Texas.

He was one of the founders of the Fred Fugazzi Memorial Award, a scholarship award given to Staten Island's top football players.

In 1996, Mr. Campbell was honored with the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce's Humanitarian of the Year Award for his role as a principal.

Mr. Campbell was a lector at the Holy Name of Jesus R.C. Church, Brooklyn. He was an avid golfer and baseball fan. He also enjoyed watching his grandsons play baseball.

Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, the former Pauline Boberg; three sons, Michael, Stephen and John; a brother, James; a sister, Jean Pedersen, and two grandsons.

The funeral will be on Friday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Holy Name of Jesus R.C. Church, Brooklyn. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
