STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Bernard Hugh Brady, 76, a former Staten Islander and retired lineman, died Saturday in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy.
Born in Kingston, Pa., he moved to Prince's Bay in the 1940s and to Tottenville in 1961. He settled in Parlin, N.J., about six years ago.
A graduate of St. Mary's High School in Perth Amboy, Mr. Brady worked as a lineman for Consolidated Edison for 40 years, retiring in 2000. He was affectionately known among his co-workers as "Black Bart" according to his son, Alan.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing and crabbing. He was also a fan of the New York Yankees, and was known for always being there for his friends when needed. He was also a dedicated caregiver for his son, John, after he was injured in an accident in 1985.
Mr. Brady served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1956, and was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church in Tottenville for many years.
In addition to his son, Alan, surviving are another son, John; a brother, Martin; two sisters, Winifred Nevin and Lucille Cuneo, and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Arrangements include cremation.
