Former Staten Islander Barbara A. Sage, 65, a retired Whole Foods clerk and mutual fund service representative who will be remembered for giving motherly love to anyone who needed it, died Sunday at her home Staten Island.
Born Barbara A. Amendola in South Brooklyn, she graduated from Bay Ridge High School and earned an associate's degree in applied science from Kingsborough Community College, both Brooklyn.
She moved to Pleasant Plains in 1992 and lived there until 2004, when she relocated to Florida.
Mrs. Sage worked as a clerk at Whole Foods Market in Pompano Beach for 10 years.
She was working as a mutual fund service representative at Morgan Stanley in 5 World Trade Center during the attacks at Ground Zero, her family said.
Mrs. Sage loved to cook and bake and had completed a Master Class in cooking at the New School in Manhattan. She cooked everything, especially Italian dishes, and loved to create her own recipes. Her family loved her holiday baking, when she made pignoli, lemon and rainbow cookies.
She was outgoing and warm and welcoming, said her daughter, Kimberly Sage. People adopted her as their mother all the time. When we were kids, everyone gathered at our house, where she was 'Mom' to all of them.
While living on the Island, she was a parishioner of St. Joseph-St. Thomas R.C. Parish, Pleasant Plains. In Pompano Beach, she attended St. Coleman Catholic Church.
Mrs. Sage's first husband of 21 years, Victor E., died in 1995.
Surviving, along with her daughter, Kimberly, are her husband of 13 years, Brian McAuley; her son, Victor R. Sage; her daughter, Courtney Scalabrino; her brother, Bobby Amendola, and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Pleasant Plains. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, also Pleasant Plains.
