Audrey L. McKinnie, 80, of West Brighton, a retired nurse's aide and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Sunday in Richmond University Medical Center, also West Brighton.
A lifelong Staten Islander, she was born Audrey L. Moody in Sandy Ground, where her family first settled five generations ago.
She graduated from Tottenville High School.
Mrs. McKinnie worked as a nurse's aide at the former Willowbrook State School for 27 years. She retired in 1990.
She moved to West Brighton three years ago.
Mrs. McKinnie was a member of the Sandy Ground Historical Society and enjoyed participating in its events.
Her family was most important to her, and she treasured time spent with them, and going to family functions. She also helped raise her grandchildren, they said.
She was always laughing and was so funny, with the things she said. She was kind and caring, our angel. She's going to be so missed, said her daughter, Katherine Thompson.
Mrs. McKinnie also enjoyed watching Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune on television.
She was a longtime member of Rossville A.M.E. Zion Church.
Mrs. McKinnie's son, Bernard, died in 2005.
Surviving, along with her daughter, Katherine, are her son, Robert Jr., two sisters, Joyce Moody and Sylvia D'Alessandro; three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
The funeral service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Rossville A.M.E. Zion Church. The Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, is handling arrangements, including cremation.
