Anna Catania

July 22, 1935 — January 11, 2025

Anna Catania, 89, passed away early morning on January 11, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Ribera, Sicily in 1935, Anna displayed a hardworking, resilient spirit from an early age. As a girl, she trained to become a talented seamstress and embroiderer.

Anna met her husband of 68 years, Gerlando, at a local store in Ribera. They became engaged during a St. Joseph’s Day procession in the town, and married soon after. Together, their family grew, all while Anna managed a successful local hardware store, and continued her work as a skilled seamstress. After emigrating to Staten Island, NY in the 1960’s, she and Gerlando formed a close-knit group of friends and family. She was known for cooking Sicilian feasts and sharing her love through food, especially during the holidays.

Anna loved to travel and spent many summers abroad. During her older years, she maintained a refined fashion sense and enjoyed gardening in her yard. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Anna was happiest spending time with the newest members of her ever-expanding family.

Throughout her life, she faced many challenges, but always persevered. She will be remembered as this family’s matriarch, leaving behind a legacy of strength, love, and cherished recipes.

Anna is now reunited with her husband, Gerlando. She is survived by her three daughters: Cathy, Lilly, and Franca; three loving sons-in-law Michael Porto, Martin Blondell, and Victor Morvillo; 10 grandchildren: Anne (Paul), David, Alexandra (Lonnie), Daniel (Laura), Victor (Liana), Michael (Amanda), Samantha (Jonathan), Gerard, Joseph (Rachel), and Robert; and seven great-grandchildren: Fiona, Aria, Zoe, Joanna, Zadie, Bryce, and Emma.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Alzheimer's Foundation of America OR Staten Island University Hospice in Anna's name would be appreciated.
