STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Amelia Potenza-Newborn, 76, of Huguenot, a retired certified nursing assistant, died Wednesday in the Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.
Born Amelia Caso in Salerno, Italy, she arrived in the United States in 1956 aboard the Andrea Doria with her brother after a flood devastated her hometown, killing her parents and another brother. She lived in the Bronx and relocated to Westerleigh in 1968. She settled in Huguenot in 2011.
Mrs. Potenza-Newborn worked for 25 years as a certified nursing assistant with the Verrazano Nursing Home before retiring in 2001.
Mrs. Potenza-Newborn was a member of Local 1199 Service Employees International Union.
She was a member of the Stolzenthaler Columbiettes, Knights of Columbus, was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
She was parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Huguenot. Mrs. Potenza-Newborn was also a former parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh, where she belonged to the Rosary Altar Society.
Her first husband of 15 years, Joseph Potenza, died in 1974.
Surviving are her husband, Edmund Newborn; four sons, Vincent, Joseph Jr. and David Potenza and Edmund Newborn II; a daughter, Luisa Leith; one brother, Giuseppe Caso; one sister, Enza Mele, and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
