Alfred F. Figuly, 86, of Tottenville, a retired firefighter and the father of nine children, died Saturday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Figuly moved to Huguenot in the 1950s and settled in Tottenville several years later.

Mr. Figuly was a firefighter with the FDNY for 37 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the United Retired Firefighters Association.

The father of nine children, Mr. Figuly was remembered for instilling his values of hard work, loyalty and responsibility, and enjoying life's simple pleasures.

He loved the water, clamming and socializing at the Great Kills Marina, Raritan Bay and Sandy Hook. Mr. Figuly enjoyed adventure, and at the age of 80, he went skydiving in California and took a white-water rafting trip. He also enjoyed cooking.

Alfred encouraged his children and grandchildren to take up clamming, teaching them how to prep the boat, cull the clams and showed them how to fiberglass the pram, said his daughter, Mary Navas. He even went so far as to dress up as a bag of clams one Halloween and scare trick-a-treaters.

Mr. Figuly served in the U.S. Navy, and he was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, the former Katherine Williams; six sons, Robert, Alfred, Ronald, Paul, John and Michael; three daughters, Margaret Figuly, Mary Navas and Theresa Figuly-Auffredou; a brother, Ronald Figuly; 18 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Arrangements include cremation.
