Born on March 25, 1926, to Caroline and Ralph Bilsing, Virginia grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Summers were spent at her grandparents' cottage at Lake Ronkonkoma.
Virginia attended P.S. 170 and was a member of the first graduating class at Fort Hamilton High School. After graduation she worked as a private secretary for the Shell Chemical Corporation and the Pennsylvania Railroad/Long Island Railroad Company.
Virginia married her beloved husband, Thomas, in 1950. As the family grew, they moved from Brooklyn to Middletown, N.J., and finally to Staten Island, raising eight children along the way. Virginia was a faithful communicant of St. Clare and Holy Child.
In 1988, Virginia retired from Scaran Oil. She and Tom then settled in Toms River, N.J. Two years ago they moved to Moorestown, N.J., to live with their daughter, Barbara, and family.
Virginia possessed a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed all types of music, from classical to folk. She was an avid reader. When she wasn't visiting her children and grandchildren, Virginia loved to travel and visit museums, crochet, and play bridge.
Virginia is survived by six of her eight children, Carolyn (Kevin) Walsh, Dr. Barbara (John Jr.) Connors, Thomas (Carolann), Jeanne (John) Podeszwa, John (Nona), Virginia (James) Tronolone; her daughter-in-law, Carmen, 18 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
She lost her husband, the love of her life, three months before their 65th wedding anniversary. Virginia was also predeceased by her two sons, James and Robert, and her brother, Ralph Bilsing, a Japanese prisoner of war during World War II.
The funeral is from Bedell-Pizzo on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Holy Child R.C. Church at 10 a.m. Interment is in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may visit on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.
