I first met Ron during our qualifying FDNY Physical in Manhattan, when we shared a ride home jn what he came to regard as my hippie VW van.
The year 1968 saw our second association, enrolled in the FDNY Probie school together, as we commuted from Welfare Island with three other Tottenville Probies.
That year of 1968 was also the year that Mr. Roger's Neighborhood made its national debut, and a few of us immediately agreed on the remarkable resemblance Ron bore to the show's star, Fred Rogers, both in appearance and personality.
The passage of time only served to increase the likeness, so much so that as we were fortunate enough to spend our final FDNY years together again in the Tottenville firehouse, our conversations frequently drifted toward the selfsame similarities, Fred having been an active Minister in his religious tradition, and Ron in his own.
This twinning, I had pointed out, was well exemplified in the press release composed by Rogers in the intro to his show, which I believe as applicable to both persons as it was then, The purpose of the show would be to promote good self-esteem, self control, imagination, creativity, curiosity, cooperation, patience and persistence.
As with others whose lives may best be described as holy, conversation did not always come easily to Ron, as though at times it were out of charity he made the journey to the dwelling place of others, and silence was his homeland.
To this day I still find the words of Fred Rogers appropriate and coincidental in their characterization:One of the greatest gifts you can give anybody is the gift of your honest self. and If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you can leave at every meeting with another person.
It was my final privilege to be one of the cloud of witnesses to share some of the final moments when Ron's steady light began to flicker and come to realize that his wonderful virtues had survived the malignant cancer untouched, and been reborn in those he held most dearly.
The Southernmost town in N.Y.S. has truly been, Mr. Biller's Neighborhood, and he has already been sorely missed.
May all the good that Ron did, and the evils he endured, united with the life and work of his Lord, bring him and us all, to the joys of the Kingdom and the presence of our Shepherd and Comforter.
