Gene Cosgriff, 86, of Pleasant Plains, a retired storekeeper and community leader whose efforts prevented the filling of liquid natural gas (LNG) tanks in Rossville, died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.

Mr. Cosgriff, along with his wife, Edwina and other community members, formed BLAST -- Bring Legal Action to Stop the Tanks -- prior to a tragic 1973 LNG tank explosion in Bloomfield which caused 40 deaths. They had already questioned the safety of transporting and storing liquid gas in populated areas.

After the deadlly accident, they continued to fight the building of two additional tanks in Rossville. Though the tanks were eventually built, BLAST's efforts prevented them from ever being filled.

Mr. Cosgriff was also a member of the Staten Island Respect Life Vicariate of the Archdiocese of New York, and spent many years working for the right-to-life movement.

Born in the Bronx, he grew up in Brooklyn, where he graduated from Manual Training High School. He settled in Pleasant Plains in 1964.

Mr. Cosgriff worked as a senior storekeeper, overseeing inventory, deliveries and warehouse transactions for the Staten Island Ferry. He also worked as a civilian employee for the city Fire Department. He retired in 1993.

He was a member of the Stolzenthaler Council, Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

An accomplished vocalist, he loved to sing and entertain at many local nursing homes. He also enjoyed working on the computer, square dancing, camping and dining with his family at Red Lobster.

He was a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church, Pleasant Plains.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, Edwina; he is survived by his sons, Stephen, Patrick, Timothy, Kerry, Christopher, Edward, Sean, Michael and John; his daughters, Eugenia Schubert, Ave Maria Hurley, Lillian Hobson, Elizabeth O'Regan and Bridget Lillo; 41 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Monday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church, Pleasant Plains. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, also Pleasant Plains.

I miss you every day even though I know you are in my heart always.
I wish I could stop crying about your being gone ,maybe in time , it;s only been a month and a half.
You were a good Dad, the first man I have ever loved an trusted, always made us feel safe ,always doing something to entertain us .You were a keeper all right , I am filled with wonderful memories, and happy thoughts because of the type man you were.
You did a great job raising us, and instilling values (well in most of us there are a few iffy ones).
I am proud to be your daughter ,and most of all your namesake !You always told me I was number 1 daughter( duh that was a no brainer because I was the first daughter lol).I was also your turkey when I was little , Georgie girl as a teenager,GenieLLil as a young women and always your dependable one as an adult. (I liked that one the best)turkey and George girl not so much lol.
Your leaving has left a hole the size of the grand canyon in my heart. I know they say time will heal that, I hope so .I miss you a great deal, you surely were one of a kind.I miss you and loved you all of my life and am always proud that you were my father. I LOVE YOU POP!~ #1~

A long as I remember, you were singing and telling jokes. You played with us, took us to parks, shot hoops and showed us tricks you did with a basketball. You taught us to swim, to float, to eat italian ices and sing, The Bear Went Over the Mountain - Parkalarkala,Row Row Row Your Boat and many more songs that we sang in the car as we traveled to Bear Mountain and other parks and lakes - Sebago- upstate NY - and later Sebago in Maine.. You taught me how to draw and shade mountains. You taught me the value of hard work... pints of Breyers hand packed from Jordans...splitting large fries to economize at Westons and treating us to shakes and burgers before their ever was a Mc Donalds.. You drew a new card birth announcement for each new child that arrived- each special and each with a poem you wrote for us welcoming us into the world. You treated our Mother like a queen and always never quarreled nor raised your voice...You were also a force to be reckoned with when we didnt mind what she said and all she would have to tell us is Wait til your father gets home...which almost always sufficed to keep us in line. You were a great role model, both you and Mom, always put us first and always provided well for us. The vacations in Maine, the amusement parks in Coney Island and Rye Beach~ the Drive Inn at Valley Stream-- the summer weekend at Cheesequake and later the campgrounds. You were a leader and we followed. You saw the threat of the LNG tanks and despite how much you did for us, you made the time to work with Mom and many others to create BLAST and fight to prevent the filling of the LNG tanks~ Researching before there was an internet to rely on - you did your homework and not only defeated LNG on Staten Island but in many other places as well~! You were a champion. You are my hero. I will love you forever and know God blessed you and will keep you will we all meet at the Resurrection. Rest in peace Dad, your earthly toils and concerns are done.We will miss you forever until we meet again, good nite.

I called you Daddy and it made you smile. I was your tiniest of 14 babies, and Lucky #7. You always made each of us feel special and taught us what love means! Your adoration of Mom for over 65 years is the truest testament to what makes a loving family! We will miss you terribly but your memory will live on forever in our hearts. God Blessed us with you Dad! Thank you for everything. Love always and forever, Lillian
