Longtime Oakwood resident Anthony Garin, 85, a retired pharmaceutical employee who was devoted to his family, died Saturday in Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville.

Mr. Garin was born in Palmerton, Pa., and grew up in Brooklyn, where he graduated from Lafayette High School.

In 1963, he moved to Oakwood and lived there until 2010 when he entered the nursing facility.

Mr. Garin's career was diverse. He worked for 18 years as a buyer of heavy equipment at Pfizer in Brooklyn, then at K-Mart in New Dorp, in the sporting goods department. He retired in 1997, from the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, Manhattan as a security guard.

He attended St. John's University in Queens, where he played baseball and participated in the 1949 College World Series.

Mr. Garin enjoyed relaxing at his vacation home in Shohola Falls, Pa.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Ida Nappi; his sons, Thomas and James; his daughters, Patricia Matassa-Marinelli, Laurie Dionisio and Linda Jennings and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Richmond. Burial will be in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.
