Longtime Tottenville resident Joseph W. Lennox, 74, a retired maintenance supervisor who will be remembered for his devotion to his family, died Friday at home.

Born in Manhattan, he moved with his family to Tottenville as an infant. He lived in Westerleigh and Castleton Corners, then returned to Tottenville, where he resided for the last 50 years.

He graduated from McKee High School in 1958.

Mr. Lennox had a long and diverse career. He worked as a bull rider, roofer and truck driver, spent more than 23 years at Great Lakes Dock and Dredge Company in Mariners Harbor, was a maintenance supervisor for 11 years at the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility in Rossville, and owned and operated Encon, an insulation business in Tottenville for four years. He retired in 2002.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1960. He attained the rank of corporal specialist 4th class and was stationed in Korea. He was a member of the American Legion Post.

An avid boater, he was a member of the Bentley Yacht Club.

He enjoyed travel, taking cruises, and collecting trains. He also enjoyed designing, building projects and was an expert in car and boat engine repair, his family said.

He was loving, kind and generous to all his family and friends, they added.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, the former Janet Hansen; his sons, Robert Lennox and Robert Hess; his brothers, Charles and Harold; his sisters, Bunny Fougeron, Alice Desiderato and Linda Price and three grandchildren.

The funeral service will be Thursday at 9 a.m. in the Bedell Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Arrangements include cremation.
