Michael E. Hughes, 48, of Bayville, N.J., a former construction worker and lover of the Jersey Shore, died Saturday at his home.

Born in Bay Ridge, Mr. Hughes moved to Great Kills in 1992. Several years later, he relocated to Antigua, and 10 years, after that he moved to Bayville.

He graduated from McKee High School and took work as a waiter and cook in various restaurants and hotels. After a decade in food service, he became a roofer and builder.

A trip to Antigua for hurricane relief led to his managing construction sites. When Mr. Hughes returned to the U.S., he continued his construction work with A.U.M Associates in Manhattan until an industrial accident caused him to retire in 2003.

Mr. Hughes had a love of the beach. He enjoyed going to the Jersey Shore and Atlantic City with friends and family. He was also very fond of his dog, Diesel.

He was renowned for his generosity, said his sister, Mary Hughes.

His father, Eugene, died in 2003.

Along with his sister, Mary Hughes, survivors include his daughter, Brooklynn Rose Hughes; his mother, Beverley Matthias; his stepfather, Joseph O'Sullivan; three brothers, Barry, Edmund and Patrick Hughes, and his former wife, Jeannette Matthews.

The funeral service will be Friday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. John Neumann R.C. Church, Greenridge. Arrangements include cremation.
