Joseph Ferro, 84, of Charleston, a retired sanitation foreman, died Friday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.

Born in Brooklyn, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He moved to New Springville in 1971 and to Charleston in 2001.

He was a foreman for the city Department of Sanitation for 20 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a parishioner of St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Richmond.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and liked to whistle and shop for groceries. He attended the Seaview Hospital and Home Adult Day Center.

His wife of 43 years, the former Josephine Savasta, died in 2001.

Surviving are his son, Louis; a daughter, Joanne Ciarcia; a sister, Marie Robbins, and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be on Monday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Thomas R.C. Church, Pleasant Plains. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
