Salvatore J. Caravello, 57, a Richmond Valley resident with a talent for auto mechanics, died Saturday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Caravello moved to Westerleigh 15 years ago. He settled in Richmond Valley in 2003.

Mr. Caravello took apart his first car engine at the age of 12 and realized that he wanted to become an auto mechanic. He was a self-employed mechanic in Brooklyn for two years but his career was cut short after he became disabled in a motorcycle accident at the age of 20.

He graduated from Bishop Ford High School in Brooklyn.

He was a gentle soul and especially fond of his nieces and nephews, Sean, Lauran, Mark, Charlotte and James, and also his two grandchildren, Salvatore and Addison, said his sister-in-law, Lori Caravello.

Mr. Caravello enjoyed trips to the Jersey Shore.

He was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.

Surviving are a son, Salvatore Jr.; a brother, Matteo; a sister, Grace C. Caravello-Gibson, and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
