STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Lifelong Tottenville resident Nicholas J. Filimon, 86, a retired chemist, died Wednesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.

A graduate of Tottenville High School, he was a member of the school band and was its oldest living member, according to his family. He later earned a degree in chemistry from Wagner College, Grymes Hill.

Mr. Filimon worked for 24 years as a chemist for National Lead in Perth Amboy. Mr. Filimon also spent close to 10 years at PSE&G in New Jersey, before leaving on disability in the 1980s.

Mr. Filimon served as quartermaster in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1944 to 1947, stationed in Samson, N.Y., Bainbridge, Md., and the Philippines.

He was a founding member of the South Shore Band and a jazz band that played at Island nursing homes.

Mr. Filimon served for 50 years as a Boy Scout leader for Troop and Cub Pack 46. A former Boy Scout, Mr. Filimon had attained the rank of Eagle Scout and had also received the Silver Beaver Award.

Mr. Filimon was a member of the South Baptist Church, Tottenville.

He enjoyed photography, listening to music and watching old westerns. He was also an avid animal lover.

He was a dedicated husband and a good provider for his family, said his son, David C. Filimon.

His son, Peter, died in 1970.

Along with his son, David, also surviving are a wife of 62 years, the former Janice M. Petersen; another son, Michael J.; three daughters, Katherine A. Carbone, Elizabeth A. Dimino and Jane Kurabieski; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
