STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Mary J. Gallagher, 88, formerly of Tottenville, died Saturday in the Leisure Park Nursing Home, Lakewood, N.J.

Born Mary J. Moog in Tottenville, she moved to Prince’s Bay in 1968; the Poconos in 1983, and to Lakewood in 1993.

A graduate of Tottenville High School, she worked as a machinist for former S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Company in Prince’s Bay during World War II.

In the early 1960s, she took a job with Peterson’s Machine Shop in Tottenville. She also worked as dental assistant at Mount Loretto in Pleasant Plains and at the former Ethan Allen furniture store in New Springville during the 1970s.

Mrs. Gallagher participated in several social clubs while living in Leisure Village. She loved spending time with her family, and was considered “everyone’s favorite aunt.”

In her leisure time, she especially enjoyed decorating her home and dancing.

“She was always the first on and the last off the dance floor,” said her son, Charlie.

She also loved spending time with her grandson.

“Her grandson, Jimmy, was the light of her life,” said her son, Charlie. While living on Staten Island, Mrs. Gallagher was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.

Her husband of 25 years, Howard, died in 1993.

Surviving are her son, Charles T. Sauss; her daughter, Marie A. Rettig; a brother, David Moog, and one grandson.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.

Your Mom was a great lady and I enjoyed the times that we spent together. I remember providing the music and entertainment for her wedding to Jim and her 80th birthday party. She was bleesed with a long life and I owe her thanks for giving me my life-long friend, her son Charlie.
