STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Rose Catania, 99, of Rossville, a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was looking forward to becoming a centenarian in July, died Tuesday in Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home.

Born Rose Marino in Naro, Sicily, Italy, in the province of Agrigento, she immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1920.

Mrs. Catania moved to Brooklyn in 1936, and settled in Rossville in 1986.

She worked as a seamstress for many years, but her primary focus was her family.

“She was an amazing person and a hardworking mom who took pride in her family and was looking forward to turning 100 years old in July,” her family said.

Mrs. Catania enjoyed attending the Mount Loretto Friendship Club.

She was a parishioner of St. Joseph-St. Thomas R.C. Parish, Pleasant Plains.

Her husband of more than 60 years, Cologero, died in 1983, and her daughter, Carmela Marino, died in 1982.

Surviving Mrs. Catania are her sons, Santo and John; 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be tomorrow from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a blessing at 9:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
